Greek Council for Refugees

Founded in 1989, Greek Council for Refugees (GCR) is the oldest and largest NGO in Greece exclusively dedicated to international protection issues. With a mission to promote the rights of asylum seekers and refugees, through the provision of legal and social services, and through advocacy, GCR has supported more than 80.000 asylum seekers and refugees. Our organization prioritizes the identification and treatment of the most vulnerable cases amongst asylum seekers, such as victims of racist violence / trafficking / torture, UAMs, etc. and is based in Athens with branch offices in Thessaloniki, Ioannina, and Lesvos. Moreover, GCR has presence in Samos, Kos, Leros and Rhodes and undertakes field missions in camps all around the country and specifically close to boarder areas for both the identification of vulnerable cases, and the provision of support, but also for the monitoring of asylum and reception conditions and procedures.

CCR is an association recognized as a special charity, is included in the Registers of competent Ministries, has a Consultative Status in the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the UN since 2001 and is an operative partner of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). In addition to the above, GCR is a member of the Executive Committee of the European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE) since 1991, a member of the  Separated Children in Europe Programme (SCEP) while it also participates in the National Committee for Human Rights (EEDA) since 1999 and in 2005 it was offered an award by the President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Karolos Papoulias, as a “Quality Isle of Collective Action” for its contribution in the creation of volunteer and innovative, quality social work in our country.
